Which puzzle is easiest?
Start with a word search. Nothing to remember or spell: just find the words in the list. Our large print grids use 12 words that never run backwards, so they stay relaxing.
Next, a large print crossword with the word bank. Every answer is listed below the clues, so the puzzle becomes a matching game. When that feels easy, print the version without the bank.
For number lovers, very easy sudoku. Each empty square can be filled by checking its row, column and box; there is never a need to guess. Easy and medium levels add one more technique.
For a group, bingo. One large card per page, with numbers or themed words. Number bingo includes a caller’s board, and an on-screen number caller means anyone can run the game.
For activity directors and caregivers
A mixed handout works well for a 30 to 45 minute session: one word search to warm up, one crossword to solve together, and a bingo round to finish. Large print crossword pages include a few “talk about it” questions and an activity idea for the same theme, so a puzzle can lead into conversation and shared memories.
Card games are just as popular: our printable score sheets for canasta, rummy, gin rummy and bridge come in large print too.
For memory care groups, the word bank crosswords and the gentlest word searches let everyone take part. Reading clues aloud and filling in a shared copy on a table or projector helps people who no longer write easily.
For families
Print a small stack before a visit, or mail a few puzzles with a letter. Many grandparents enjoy solving alongside grandchildren: a child can hunt for words while the grandparent reads the clues. The same puzzles also work on a tablet: word searches, crosswords and sudoku can be solved on screen with large, easy-to-tap squares.
How big is the print?
- Word searches: an 11 × 11 grid that fills the page, so each square is more than half an inch wide, with heavy letters about one and a half times the size of a regular puzzle.
- Crosswords: squares between 0.61 and 0.73 inches on paper; clues printed at 18 point on their own page.
- Sudoku: one puzzle per page with squares of about 0.83 inches and 36-point digits.
- Bingo: one big card per page in the large print PDF.
Printing tips
- Print at 100% (“actual size”) for the biggest squares. If your printer uses A4 paper, choose “fit to page”.
- Black and white is fine: the puzzles have no background colors, so they save ink and stay sharp.
- A clipboard and a felt-tip pen or a soft pencil are easier to use than a ballpoint for many people.
- Need the answers? They are on the last page of every word search, crossword and sudoku PDF, so you can keep them aside.
Questions
Are these puzzles free for care homes and senior centers?
Yes. You can print and copy them for residents, activity groups, libraries, churches and family use at no charge. Please don’t sell them.
Which puzzle should I give someone with low vision?
Start with the large print sudoku (the biggest squares and 36-point digits) or a large print word search (big, heavy letters on a full-page grid). Print at actual size and use good light.
Do puzzles help keep the mind sharp?
Many people find puzzles a pleasant way to stay mentally active and to spend time together. Research on whether they protect memory is mixed, so think of them as an enjoyable activity rather than a treatment.
Where are the answers?
Every word search, crossword and sudoku PDF includes an answer key at the end. Puzzles solved on screen also have a “Show answer key” or “Show solution” option.
