About this puzzle

Big, bold letters and fewer, longer words: an easier-on-the-eyes St. Patrick’s Day word search. Shamrocks, rainbows and a leprechaun guarding his pot of gold. St. Patrick’s Day falls on March 17 and honors Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, who by legend used the three-leaf shamrock to teach. Today it means green clothes, Irish music on the fiddle and the harp, and big parades; New York has marched since the 1700s and Chicago dyes its river green.

The large print edition uses an 11×11 grid that fills a letter-size page, and words only run across, down or diagonally down.

All 20 words in this theme: Shamrock, Leprechaun, Rainbow, Green, Lucky, Clover, Parade, Ireland, Harp, Fiddle, Horseshoe, Coins, Bagpipes, Dancing, Celtic, Cabbage, Emerald, Dublin, Limerick, Blarney.

Talk about it

Questions to share while solving, for activity groups, memory care or a visit with family:

  • Did your family have Irish roots, or did you celebrate anyway?
  • Did you ever get pinched for not wearing green?
  • Have you seen a St. Patrick’s Day parade? Where?
  • Did you ever find a four-leaf clover?
  • What Irish song or tune do you know?

Activity tip: Play some gentle Irish fiddle or harp music while people solve, and give a gold-wrapped chocolate coin to everyone who finishes, like a leprechaun’s reward.

Questions

How big are the letters?

The grid fills most of a letter-size page, with letters about one and a half times the size of a regular (Medium) word search, and the word list is printed in large type too.

Are these suitable for memory care or activity groups?

Yes. Words only run left to right, top to bottom or diagonally down, so the puzzles are relaxing rather than tricky. Print as many copies as your group needs.

Is there a harder version?

Every theme also has a regular print edition with Easy, Medium and Hard levels.
