About this puzzle
A cozy large print winter crossword about snow days, mittens, hot cocoa and the fireplace. It has no holiday words, so it works all the way from December to March.
On paper the squares are about .61 inches wide, roomy enough for shaky handwriting or a thick marker. The PDF is laid out like a large print puzzle book: the 12×11 grid has page one to itself, the 12 clues are printed at 18 point on page two, and the answer key is on page three. Lay the first two pages side by side and solve without squinting.
Did you know?
- Wilson Bentley, a Vermont farmer, took the first known photograph of a single snowflake in 1885.
- Mittens usually keep hands warmer than gloves because the fingers share their heat.
- A blizzard is defined by strong wind and blowing snow that cuts visibility, not just by how much snow falls.
Talk about it
- Did school ever close for snow when you were young? What did you do with the day?
- Who in your family was first out with the shovel?
- What did your winter coat look like as a child?
- Is there a winter meal that still warms you up just thinking about it?
Activity tip
Serve warm drinks while people solve. Afterwards, go around the table and finish the sentence “The coldest I have ever been was…” for an easy round of stories.
