Hard Logic Puzzles for Adults

Five people, five choices in each category and up to ten clues, most of them “not” and “either… or…”. Hard logic grids give you very few direct answers: you get there by cross-referencing the blocks until everything falls into place. Every puzzle still has exactly one solution and needs no guessing.

How to crack a hard logic grid

  1. Mark every X first. Go through all the “not” clues and all the options an “either… or…” clue rules out.
  2. Look for a row or column with four X marks. The fifth square is the dot; then cross out the rest of its column and row.
  3. Carry facts across blocks. If Helen waters on Monday and the Monday gardener does not grow roses, Helen does not grow roses either.
  4. Revisit the “either” clues. As soon as one of the two choices is crossed out, the other is the answer.
  5. Repeat. Each new dot usually unlocks the next one.

Logic puzzles for adults and seniors

Hard grids are a satisfying, quiet challenge for adults who enjoy sudoku or crosswords and want something that uses a different kind of reasoning. They also work well for seniors and puzzle clubs: no general knowledge or spelling is needed, only patience. The PDF prints one puzzle per page with a clear grid and the answer key at the back.

Questions

Are hard logic puzzles too difficult for beginners?

They can be. If you are new to logic grids, start with the easy or medium puzzles to learn the method, then come back.

Is guessing ever needed?

No. Each puzzle is checked by a solver that only uses the steps described on this page, so you can always find the next move by reasoning.
