About this puzzle

Big, bold letters and fewer, longer words: an easier-on-the-eyes july word search. Fireworks, flags and watermelon. This July word search celebrates the Fourth of July with parades, sparklers, stars and stripes, and the long, hot days of summer at the lake. July is National Ice Cream Month and National Picnic Month, the first people walked on the Moon on July 20, 1969, the birthstone is the ruby and the birth flowers are the larkspur and the water lily.

The large print edition uses an 11×11 grid that fills a letter-size page, and words only run across, down or diagonally down.

All 20 words in this theme: Fireworks, Parade, Freedom, Liberty, Stars, Stripes, Barbecue, Watermelon, Sundae, Sparkler, Picnic, Lake, Canoe, Patriotic, Heatwave, Sunflower, Corn, Ruby, Larkspur, Astronaut.

Talk about it

Questions to share while solving, for activity groups, memory care or a visit with family:

  • How did your family celebrate the Fourth of July?
  • Where were you when people first walked on the Moon in 1969?
  • What is your favorite ice cream flavor, and where did you buy it?
  • Did you spend summers at a lake, the beach or in the city?
  • What was always on the table at your summer cookouts?

Activity tip: Pair the puzzle with an ice cream social: each person who finishes picks a topping, and the first word found by the group decides the flavor of the day.

Questions

How big are the letters?

The grid fills most of a letter-size page, with letters about one and a half times the size of a regular (Medium) word search, and the word list is printed in large type too.

Are these suitable for memory care or activity groups?

Yes. Words only run left to right, top to bottom or diagonally down, so the puzzles are relaxing rather than tricky. Print as many copies as your group needs.

Is there a harder version?

Every theme also has a regular print edition with Easy, Medium and Hard levels.
