About this puzzle

Big, bold letters and fewer, longer words: an easier-on-the-eyes august word search. The last full month of summer. This August word search mixes county fairs, lighthouses and garden-ripe peaches, tomatoes and zucchini with the Perseid meteor shower, which peaks around August 12. Then it is back to school with backpacks, pencils and new crayons. August is National Peach Month and National Sandwich Month, the birthstone is the peridot and the birth flowers are the gladiolus and the poppy.

The large print edition uses an 11×11 grid that fills a letter-size page, and words only run across, down or diagonally down.

All 20 words in this theme: Backpack, School, Pencils, Crayons, Notebook, Peaches, Tomatoes, Sandwich, Sunglasses, Sprinkler, Lighthouse, Friendship, Meteor, Fairgrounds, Cicada, Zucchini, Peridot, Gladiolus, Poppy, Virgo.

Talk about it

Questions to share while solving, for activity groups, memory care or a visit with family:

  • What did you buy or bring on the first day of school?
  • Did you go to a county or state fair? What did you enjoy most?
  • What vegetables grew best in your garden?
  • Have you ever seen a shooting star or a meteor shower?
  • Is there a lighthouse you have visited and remember?

Activity tip: National Lighthouse Day is August 7. Show a few photos of famous lighthouses after the puzzle and ask who has visited one, or bring fresh peaches to share.

Questions

How big are the letters?

The grid fills most of a letter-size page, with letters about one and a half times the size of a regular (Medium) word search, and the word list is printed in large type too.

Are these suitable for memory care or activity groups?

Yes. Words only run left to right, top to bottom or diagonally down, so the puzzles are relaxing rather than tricky. Print as many copies as your group needs.

Is there a harder version?

Every theme also has a regular print edition with Easy, Medium and Hard levels.
