About this puzzle

Big, bold letters and fewer, longer words: an easier-on-the-eyes January word search. The month named after Janus, the Roman god with two faces, one looking back at the old year and one looking ahead to the new. This January word search goes beyond snow: the garnet birthstone, the snowdrop and the carnation, National Hot Tea Month and National Soup Month, National Popcorn Day (January 19) and National Puzzle Day (January 29), plus Dr. King’s dream on the third Monday. Easy for second graders, hard enough for grown-ups.

The large print edition uses an 11×11 grid that fills a letter-size page, and words only run across, down or diagonally down.

All 20 words in this theme: Resolution, Calendar, Snowdrop, Garnet, Soup, Popcorn, Puzzle, Penguin, Snowshoe, Dream, Teacup, Janus, Capricorn, Aquarius, Carnation, Equality, Planner, Hibernate, Sleet, Goals.

Talk about it

Questions to share while solving, for activity groups, memory care or a visit with family:

  • What did January look like where you grew up: deep snow, rain or sunshine?
  • Do you make New Year’s resolutions? Which one lasted the longest?
  • What soup did your family make on cold days, and who made it best?
  • Do you know your birthstone or birth flower? Who in your family has a January birthday?
  • What do you like to do on a quiet winter afternoon indoors?

Activity tip: January 29 is National Puzzle Day, a good excuse for a puzzle party: set out word searches, a jigsaw and a pot of tea, and let each person pick the puzzle they enjoy most.

Questions

How big are the letters?

The grid fills most of a letter-size page, with letters about one and a half times the size of a regular (Medium) word search, and the word list is printed in large type too.

Are these suitable for memory care or activity groups?

Yes. Words only run left to right, top to bottom or diagonally down, so the puzzles are relaxing rather than tricky. Print as many copies as your group needs.

Is there a harder version?

Every theme also has a regular print edition with Easy, Medium and Hard levels.
