About this puzzle

Big, bold letters and fewer, longer words: an easier-on-the-eyes biology word search. The science of living things, from the smallest cell to whole ecosystems. Find nucleus, membrane and chromosome, gene and DNA, bacteria, fungi and viruses, habitat and adaptation. A biology word search for middle and high school vocabulary review, and a handy warm-up before a quiz on cells or heredity.

The large print edition uses an 11×11 grid that fills a letter-size page, and words only run across, down or diagonally down.

All 20 words in this theme: Cell, Nucleus, Gene, Organism, Species, Evolution, Habitat, Bacteria, Protein, Membrane, Enzyme, Tissue, Organ, Fungi, Virus, Ecology, Chromosome, Adaptation, Dna, Plankton.

Talk about it

Questions to share while solving, for activity groups, memory care or a visit with family:

  • Did you grow up near farms, woods or the sea?
  • Which animals did you have as pets?
  • Did you ever keep a garden or grow vegetables?
  • What is the strangest animal or plant you have ever seen?
  • Did you dissect a frog in biology class?

Activity tip: Set a houseplant or a bowl of fruit on the table. Talking about where food and plants come from is a natural way into the words of the puzzle.

Questions

How big are the letters?

The grid fills most of a letter-size page, with letters about one and a half times the size of a regular (Medium) word search, and the word list is printed in large type too.

Are these suitable for memory care or activity groups?

Yes. Words only run left to right, top to bottom or diagonally down, so the puzzles are relaxing rather than tricky. Print as many copies as your group needs.

Is there a harder version?

Every theme also has a regular print edition with Easy, Medium and Hard levels.
