What is a logic grid puzzle?
A logic grid puzzle gives you a short story, a list of clues and a grid. Each person matches exactly one item in every category, and no two people share an item. The grid has a square for every possible match: you put an X where a clue rules a match out, and a dot where you know it is true. When every row and column has its dot, the puzzle is solved.
Here is how the first easy puzzle starts: Three friends are each going to a different place this summer, each traveling a different way. One of its clues reads: “The person who is going to Alaska is not traveling by train.”
How we make them
Every puzzle is built from a hidden solution, then the clues are trimmed until none can be removed. A computer solver that only uses the reasoning steps a person would use must reach exactly one answer, and a second check tries every possible answer to confirm that only one fits all the clues. So you will never need to guess, and the answer key is always right.
Who are they for?
- Kids and beginners: the easy puzzles, with three people and five or six clues.
- Classrooms: medium puzzles make a great partner activity; students explain each mark to each other.
- Adults and seniors: hard puzzles are a quiet, satisfying challenge that needs no general knowledge.
