Difficulty in sudoku comes from the steps you need, not just the number of clues. Our easy puzzles give about 37 of the 81 numbers and never need more than two simple techniques:

• The only number left. Look at an empty square, rule out every number already in its row, column and box, and one number remains.
• The only place left. Pick a number, say 7, and a box that still needs it. If every other empty square in that box is blocked by a 7 in its row or column, the 7 goes in the last free square.

Neither step involves guessing, so you can always make progress by looking carefully. When you get stuck, scan each number from 1 to 9 across the boxes; there is always a next move.

Children from about age 8 can solve easy sudoku, and it is a quiet way to practise logical thinking. Start with the very easy four-per-page set, which gives even more clues, then move on to the easy set. For classrooms, the four-per-page PDFs give each student a week of puzzles on one sheet.
