How to run a trivia session
- Pick one quiz that suits the group: a decade quiz for a lively crowd, the easy quiz or Finish the Saying for memory care.
- Print the large print PDF for each table, or read the questions aloud from this page and let people answer by holding up fingers for A, B or C.
- Play in teams of three or four, so no one feels put on the spot. Teams can talk the answer over before deciding.
- Reveal the answer after each question and leave a moment for stories. A question about the Moon landing or a school dance often starts the best conversation of the day.
- Keep score lightly, or not at all. Small prizes such as a cookie or first pick of the next quiz work well.
Trivia for people with dementia
Many people living with dementia still enjoy familiar songs, sayings and stories from long ago, and a quiz without pressure can be a pleasant shared activity. That is why the Easy Trivia and Finish the Saying quizzes use everyday knowledge and familiar proverbs, with three clear choices and no trick questions. Read slowly, show the choices in large print, give friendly hints and celebrate every answer. The aim is enjoyment and connection, not testing.
Why multiple choice?
Three choices make a quiz easier to follow when read aloud, help players who know the answer but cannot quite recall the word, and keep the pace moving. On screen, each question shows its three answers as large buttons, so the quizzes also work on a tablet passed around a table.
