About this puzzle
Big, bold letters and fewer, longer words: an easier-on-the-eyes september word search. Cooler mornings and a fresh start. September has Labor Day on the first Monday and Grandparents Day on the Sunday after it, the first day of fall at the equinox, apple cider from the orchard and Johnny Appleseed’s birthday on September 26. It is National Honey Month, Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15, the birthstone is the sapphire and the birth flowers are the aster and the morning glory.
The large print edition uses an 11×11 grid that fills a letter-size page, and words only run across, down or diagonally down.
All 20 words in this theme: Grandma, Grandpa, Labor, Autumn, Orchard, Cider, Appleseed, Harvest, Honey, Football, Lunchbox, Classroom, Equinox, Beekeeper, Sapphire, Aster, Libra, Heritage, Crickets, Breeze.
Talk about it
Questions to share while solving, for activity groups, memory care or a visit with family:
- What do you remember about your grandparents?
- What did your lunchbox look like, and what was usually in it?
- Did you ever go apple picking? What did you make with the apples?
- What did your family do on Labor Day weekend?
- Who was your favorite teacher, and why?
Activity tip: Plan the puzzle for Grandparents Day, the first Sunday after Labor Day, and invite grandchildren to solve side by side with their grandparents. Honey sticks make a sweet prize.
Questions
How big are the letters?
The grid fills most of a letter-size page, with letters about one and a half times the size of a regular (Medium) word search, and the word list is printed in large type too.
Are these suitable for memory care or activity groups?
Yes. Words only run left to right, top to bottom or diagonally down, so the puzzles are relaxing rather than tricky. Print as many copies as your group needs.
Is there a harder version?
Every theme also has a regular print edition with Easy, Medium and Hard levels.
