How to score gin rummy

Cards count face value, with jacks, queens and kings 10 and aces 1. Unmatched cards are your deadwood. You may knock when your deadwood is 10 or less.

  • Knock: if your deadwood is lower than your opponent’s (after they lay off), you score the difference.
  • Gin: going out with no deadwood earns a bonus of 20 or 25 points, depending on house rules, plus your opponent’s deadwood. The opponent may not lay off cards on a gin hand.
  • Undercut: if the knocker’s deadwood is equal to or higher than the opponent’s, the opponent scores the difference plus a bonus of 10 or 25.

Only the winner of each hand scores, so enter the points in one column and leave the other empty.

Ending the game: boxes and bonuses

The first player to reach 100 points wins and adds a game bonus of 100. Both players then add a box bonus of 20 or 25 for every hand they won; these boxes do not count toward the 100. If the loser scored nothing in the whole game (a shutout), the game bonus is 200. The final difference is the margin of victory.

The on-screen scorer counts the boxes and adds both bonuses once someone passes 100. Pick 20 or 25 for the box bonus to match your table’s rules.

House rules worth agreeing first

  • Gin and undercut bonuses: 20 and 10 in older rule books, 25 and 25 at many tables today.
  • Shutout: a 200 game bonus, or doubling the winner’s whole score.
  • Oklahoma gin: the first upcard sets the knocking limit and the game usually goes to 150.

Questions

What are boxes in gin rummy?

A box is a hand won. At the end of the game each player gets a bonus, usually 20 or 25 points, for every box. Boxes are counted separately and do not help you reach 100.

Can three people use this sheet?

Gin rummy is a two-player game. For three or more players use the rummy score sheet, which has up to six columns.

Does the scorer handle Oklahoma gin?

It adds points and bonuses for regular gin to 100. For Oklahoma gin, print the sheet and keep score by hand with your own target.

Can I copy these sheets for a club or senior center?

Yes. They are free to print and copy for home, club, senior center and other non-commercial use.
