About this puzzle

Big, bold letters and fewer, longer words: an easier-on-the-eyes may word search. Flowers everywhere and the school year almost done. May has May Day and the maypole, Mother’s Day on the second Sunday and Memorial Day on the last Monday, with parades and flags to honor those who served. It is graduation and picnic season, Older Americans Month and National Bike Month. The birthstone is the emerald and the birth flowers are the lily of the valley and the hawthorn.

The large print edition uses an 11×11 grid that fills a letter-size page, and words only run across, down or diagonally down.

All 20 words in this theme: Mother, Flowers, Picnic, Maypole, Parade, Memorial, Honor, Garden, Strawberry, Sunshine, Graduation, Teacher, Blooms, Bees, Emerald, Gemini, Lilac, Bicycle, Hawthorn, Fiesta.

Talk about it

Questions to share while solving, for activity groups, memory care or a visit with family:

  • What is a favorite memory of your mother or grandmother?
  • Did your town hold a Memorial Day parade? Did you march in it?
  • What flowers grew in your yard in May?
  • Do you remember your own graduation day?
  • Where was the best picnic you ever had?

Activity tip: May is Older Americans Month. Invite residents to share a skill or story after solving, and print a few extra copies for visiting grandchildren to work on together with them.

Questions

How big are the letters?

The grid fills most of a letter-size page, with letters about one and a half times the size of a regular (Medium) word search, and the word list is printed in large type too.

Are these suitable for memory care or activity groups?

Yes. Words only run left to right, top to bottom or diagonally down, so the puzzles are relaxing rather than tricky. Print as many copies as your group needs.

Is there a harder version?

Every theme also has a regular print edition with Easy, Medium and Hard levels.
