About this puzzle
One large print page for the whole December season, so nobody at the table is left out: Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and the New Year share the same grid. The twelve words are big and familiar, from gifts, lights and candles to carols, a wreath and a cup of cocoa, and they never run backwards. It works for a mixed group at a senior center, a library afternoon or a family visit.
This edition hides the first 12 of the theme’s 20 words in an 11×11 grid, never backwards. How our large print puzzles work.
All 20 words in this theme: Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year, Gifts, Lights, Candles, Family, Feast, Carols, Wreath, Cocoa, Menorah, Kinara, Dreidel, Cookies, Celebrate, Tradition, Snowflake, Greetings.
Did you know?
- Kwanzaa was first celebrated in 1966 and lasts seven days, from December 26 to January 1.
- The National Christmas Tree near the White House was first lit in 1923 by President Calvin Coolidge.
- Hanukkah follows the Hebrew calendar, so its eight nights can begin anywhere from late November to late December.
Talk about it
- Which holidays did your family keep in December when you were young?
- What was the best gift you ever received, or the one you were proudest to give?
- Which holiday dish or treat takes you straight back to childhood?
- Did your family send holiday cards? Who was always first to send one?
Activity tip: Before you start, ask which holidays each person grew up with. When CHRISTMAS, HANUKKAH or KWANZAA turns up in the grid, invite someone who keeps that holiday to share one custom, if they would like.
