How to color a mandala
- Pick a small palette. Three to five colors that sit well together, such as blues and greens, or warm reds, oranges and yellows, look calmer than a full box.
- Color ring by ring. A mandala is built from rings, and every shape in a ring is the same. Give each ring one color, or alternate two, and the pattern stays balanced.
- Start in the center or at the edge, whichever you like, and keep going in one direction so the page does not smudge.
- Light first, dark last. Pale colors are easy to cover, dark ones are not. Leaving a few spaces white makes the colors around them stand out.
What to color with
- Colored pencils are best for detailed mandalas. Keep a sharpener close by.
- Felt-tip markers suit easy and medium mandalas. Put a spare sheet underneath in case the ink comes through.
- Gel pens add shine to small spaces; crayons are fine for children and the easy designs.
- Ordinary printer paper works. For markers, a heavier paper or card stock keeps the page flat and clean.
Mandalas for seniors
The easy mandalas are drawn with thick lines and large spaces, so they are clear to see and comfortable to color. Print them at 100% (“actual size”): each mandala is about 7.4 inches across. Chunky or triangular pencils are easier to hold than thin ones, and a clipboard keeps the page still. In a senior center or care home, coloring works well alongside music or conversation, and finished pages make a cheerful display. For more large print activities, see brain games for seniors.
Coloring online
Press Color online under any design. Pick a color, then tap a space to fill it; tap again with another color to change it. Undo takes back the last fill, and the white swatch works as an eraser. When you are happy, Save picture keeps your colored page as an image on your device, and Print prints it in color. A tablet is the most comfortable size, and because a single tap fills a whole space, online coloring also suits anyone whose hands are not as steady as they were.
About these mandalas
Each mandala is drawn by our own program from rings of petals, beads, arches and points around a small flower in the middle. No two are the same, and every outline is a closed shape, so markers stay inside the lines and the online tool fills each space cleanly. Like geometric designs too? Try our geometric coloring pages.
